Chapter Eight

"Tate! Tate, it’s Richard. Something’s happened to Emily. I think the poisoner has her."

"What the fuck? How? What?"

Stunned, Tate tried to get his head around what Richard had just said. It didn't make any sense, and he couldn't really understand Richard's panicked voice coming through the speaker on his car.

"She rang me just then. Said she’d found a car with rat bait. She was giving me the plate number when someone grabbed her, Tate. I heard a male voice threatening her, and then the phone went dead."

As Richard's words finally sank in, Tate’s heart plummeted. This guy didn’t care how many animals he killed. Tate had an uneasy feeling that he wouldn’t hesitate to kill a person if they got in his way.

"Fuck! Shit. Richard, do you know where she is? Did she tell you?"

"On the old road near that proposed ski place."

"On my way. Where are you?"

"I’m driving there now, too. I’ve rung the cops. Emily gave me most of the license plate number, so most are going to the old road while a few try finding out who the car belongs to."

"I’m close to there. I finished early and was on my way to see her. I’ll ring Caleb and tell him. Meet you there."

If Tate thought his heart was in danger of exploding before Richard's next words had it beating triple time. His blood turned to ice.

"Will do, and, Tate, be careful. Emily said she heard gunfire."

"Fuck! If she’s hurt in any way…"

"Just be careful, Tate, and let the cops handle it."

Tate growled deep in his throat as he slammed his foot down harder on the accelerator. If one hair on her head was damaged there was no way the scum who hurt her would be safe from him. He snarled Caleb’s name, and his phone connected him. As quickly as he could he told him what he knew.

"I’m almost there. Meet me."

"On my way, Tate."

At last just ahead Tate saw Emily’s car on the side of the road. There was no other car in sight. Tate swerved his car to a halt, he opened the door and slid partway out. He could hear sirens in the distance getting closer. Fortunately, Richard’s car pulled up alongside his as Tate pulled off his boots. He removed his parka and shirt, then stood as Richard reached him.

"Be careful."

"I will," he replied without looking up, his voice grim with anger, and fear. Dragging his jeans off, he threw his clothes into the car.

"Remind the cops not to shoot please."

"I will."

"I’ll be able to track her faster this way. I can’t see any blood, so I don’t think he shot her."

"Is Caleb on his way?"

Tate nodded and then morphed into his wolf. He sprinted into the forest as the first police car arrived. He tried sniffing the air, but his human mind was screaming “she’s safe, she has to be safe”. His wolf fought for control, and somehow Tate managed to push his fear down enough to let the wolf take over.
